CTA passenger killed, bus driver wounded in Bronzeville shooting overnight

CHICAGO — A shooting on a CTA bus killed a passenger and wounded the driver overnight in Bronzeville on the city’s South Side.

According to Chicago police, the shooting occurred in the 3400 block of South State Street, just a block away from CPD headquarters, around 12:15 a.m. Monday. Police say the CTA driver reported a disturbance in which two unknown males were in a physical altercation toward the back of the bus, when one of the offenders pulled out a gun and fired shots at the other man.

The driver then stopped the bus, police say, and the shooter fled in an unknown direction.

The victim, an unidentified man who police say was approximately in his late 20s, was shot in the chest and taken to an area hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The bus driver, meanwhile, sustained a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and was taken to an area hospital in good condition.

CTA President Dorval Carter Jr. issued a statement Monday morning, saying: “It is absolutely reprehensible that a CTA bus operator was injured due to a firearm being discharged on board a southbound No. 29 State Street bus earlier this morning, following a disturbance between two parties.

“No one should experience this kind of violence, especially while merely performing their duties serving the public as a bus driver. Regardless of circumstances, the CTA has zero tolerance for gun violence and will work with law enforcement officials to aggressively pursue upgraded charges against those found responsible for these actions.

“CTA is also assisting the Chicago Police Department in their investigation into this matter, including review of any available surveillance footage.”

A heavy police presence was at the scene early Monday morning. At one point, officers were seen working with firefighters to render aid to the wounded bus driver.

Nobody is in custody, and Area One detectives are investigating.
