In-custody death being investigated

Jul. 5—NORTH VERNON — Detectives from the Indiana State Police Versailles Post initiated an in-custody death investigation Friday, July 5, following a request from the North Vernon Police Department.

At approximately 5:50 a.m., officers from the North Vernon PD responded to a domestic incident at a residence on Hoosier Street. This was the second call-to-service to the residence.

Following an on-scene investigation, officers transported a male subject, identified as Timothy J. Fugate, 41, of North Vernon, to Ascension St. Vincent Jennings for medical examination. During transport to the hospital, it is believed Fugate suffered a medical episode and was found unresponsive upon arrival.

Medical treatment was provided to Fugate until he was pronounced dead approximately 40 minutes after his hospital arrival. North Vernon PD contacted the Versailles Post and requested detectives and crime scene investigators to initiate an in-custody death investigation. Fugate's body was transported to Hamilton County, Ohio, for the autopsy, which is pending.
