Darlene 3 Fire evacuations change, fire growth slows

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Growth slowed Friday for the Darlene 3 Fire as crews increased the containment.

As of Friday, the Darlene 3 Fire is still listed at 3,889 acres — roughly 6 square miles — which is not an increase from Thursday’s measurement. However, the fire’s containment went up from 30% to 42% according to Central Oregon Fire Info. Officials said it was thanks to “Cooler temperatures and calmer winds during the day on Thursday” that progress was made with containment.

The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office announced updated evacuations Thursday afternoon for the area around the fire.

Currently, there are Level 3 “GO NOW” evacuations in place for parts of the Deschutes National Forest. Officials are asking residents and visitors to adhere to those closures still in effect. That includes some recreation areas, such as 6 Mile Sno Park, Prairie Campground, McKay Crossing Campground, Ogden Campground and the Rosland OHV play area and adjacent trails. Check the U.S. Forest Service’s website for more details.

Meanwhile, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office has reduced the evacuation level for Newbery Estates down to Level 2 “BE SET.” The area west of Hwy 97 and north of Burgess Road was also reduced such that there is no evcuation status.

A virtual community meeting will be held at 4 p.m. Friday on the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page and it will also be broadcast at the Red Cross evacuation shelter at La Pine High School.
