Deadly crash closes lanes on Hwy 99 in Madera County

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Lanes continue to be closed going northbound on Highway 99 in Madera County on Thursday following a fatal traffic crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.

CHP says the fatal traffic crash happened shortly after noon on northbound Highway 99, between Avenue 9 and Avenue 12. According to CHP, officers and emergency personnel responded to the scene to establish what happened.

CHP says that the crash involved two tractor-trailer combinations. One tractor-trailer combination was parked on the right shoulder, and according to CHP, appeared to be doing work on the trailer towards the rear of his trailer. CHP says it was hauling several vehicles.

A second big rig carrying baby carrots was traveling northbound on the right lane at an unknown speed. CHP says the big rig veered to the right started to leave the right-hand lane, and collided with the other trailer.

According to CHP, the impact caused fatal injuries to the driver of the car hauler that was parked on the right shoulder. CHP said the man is around 50 years old.

The driver of the big rig carrying baby carrots sustained no injuries.

According to the CHP, both lanes of traffic were affected by the crash. The second lane is closed but the number one lane remains open.

This is an ongoing investigation.
