Decomposing body found wrapped in sleeping bag, dumped in trash on Manhattan street

A decomposing body was found wrapped in a sleeping bag and dumped alongside trash left outside a Manhattan apartment building, cops said Saturday.

The grisly discovery was made just before 5 p.m. on Friday after residents of the E. 27th St. near Third Ave. building in Kips Bay began complaining of the smell, police sources said.

When cops arrived, they found a large garbage bag under a sidewalk shed on a four-wheel dolly, officials said. The bag was with the building’s garbage waiting to be picked up by the Department of Sanitation. Officers cut open the plastic bag and found a blue sleeping bag.

The remains were inside the bag, police said.

The body was so badly decomposed that cops weren’t able to determine if the victim was male or female.

The city’s Medical Examiner’s office has been tasked with identifying the victim and determining how they died.

NYPD detectives were scouring the area looking for surveillance footage that can help them identify the person who dumped the body.
