BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET)– Leaders of the Democratic Party are at odds over the president’s political future. Senator Adam Schiff is the latest high-profile Democrat to call on Biden to pass the torch.

That brings the total number of Democratic lawmakers to publicly say Biden should drop out to 21, as of July 18. As President Biden self-isolates in Delaware with a case of COVID-19, he has been headstrong in resisting calls for him to drop out the race.

Neel Sannappa, a local political analyst says that if he were to exit the race, Vice President Kamala Harris would be the Democrats best bet.

“There is over $200 million dollars raised already for a Biden-Harris ticket,” said Sannappa. “In which, the only person that can easily inherit that war chest is Vice President Harris.”

Other figures in the community are sticking with President Biden.

“I’m with Joe Biden, he’s a great president and we have to stick with him,” said Dolores Huerta, civil rights icon and President of the Dolores Huerta Foundation. “He brought a lot of money for infrastructure to the country, jobs are great, the whole economy is better because of Biden. There is no reason he should leave.”

Christian Romo, Chair of Democratic Committee of Kern Dems, says the party needs someone who can beat Trump and that someone is not Biden.

“Having Kamala Harris run at the top of the ticket as the presidential nominee for the democratic party, I think we’ll have our best bet at delivering a win in November,” said Romo.

Flor Olvera, President of Democratic Women of Kern says, “We stand for social programs, we stand for democracy. I think Joe Biden is our nominee right now and I think we stand behind the nominee of the democratic party. At this point in time, it is Joe Biden.”

Recent candidate for CD-20 Marisa Wood said that Biden’s wisdom, experience and character are reasons enough for him not to drop out.
