Demolition begins on former Herald-Journal building in downtown Spartanburg, what to know
Demolition of the former Spartanburg Herald-Journal building at 189 W. Main St. has begun.
On Thursday, workers with DEMTEK LLC used cranes to remove bricks from the top half of the exterior of the former Herald Journal building.
The building is being demolished because its site will be used in the multi-use development project surrounding the future Fifth Third Park. Johnson Development Associates, the building's owner, is the project's developer.
The development project will include a baseball stadium, a parking deck on the other side of Daniel Morgan Avenue, retail and office space, apartments, and a hotel.

The city declined to comment on the plans for the site when a Herald-Journal reporter reached out on Thursday. Johnson Development Associates did not respond to requests for comment Thursday afternoon.
The Herald-Journal building was built in 1970, and the Spartanburg Herald-Journal was the sole tenant. Its owner, Gannett, was the most recent lessee.
Herald-Journal employees have been working remotely since 2022. Gannett’s lease of the building ended in January 2024.
