Demolition crews begin to tackle smoldering ruins in York

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) — Flames ripped through a warehouse in York late Friday night and on Saturday, the demolition crews rolled in.

The ruins of the warehouse at Albemarle and Elm Streets are still smoldering Saturday afternoon.

Roads in the area remain closed as demolition crews work to bring down what’s left of the building.

Dozens of firefighters from across York County and neighboring counties responded to the scene.

“Have no idea just where it was,” Parker James Hooker, a neighbor, told abc27 News. “I was up until 2:00 this morning, still hearing fire engines and so I don’t know if it was started up again. Somebody said they thought it did.”

He lives near the building and said it was still being used.

Cardboard boxes and other items can still be seen stacked up inside.

He said he’s lived there for nearly a decade and has never seen a fire that intense, a sentiment shared by much of the neighborhood.

“I seen it the next morning, but by that time, the firefighters already died down the entire fire,” Robert Rese said. “But other than that, I don’t know if we’ll see a fire like this ever happen in my life.”
