Deputies honored for rescuing man from fiery crash in Southern California
Two Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputies were honored Tuesday for their bravery in pulling a man out of a vehicle as it was engulfed in flames last year, officials announced.
The Aug. 15, 2023, incident occurred at the intersection of 15th Street West and Avenue J-10 in Lancaster just after 2:30 a.m., LASD said in a news release.
Authorities said Sgt. Collin Reddy and Deputy Jeremiah Nurse, both assigned to LASD’s Lancaster Station, displayed “remarkable acts of valor…when they pulled a man from a burning vehicle without regard for their safety.”
Body-worn camera footage of the incident shows heavy flames consuming the vehicle while the victim yells. The deputies themselves can be heard reacting to the heat of the flames as they yank the man from the car and pull him to a safe distance.
The footage captures one of the deputies stepping away after the rescue and coughing while the sound of crackling and popping is heard coming from the intense inferno.

Shortly after the rescue, another deputy stepped in to pull the victim even farther back as the flames intensified.
Congressman Mike Garcia, who represents California’s 27th District, honored Reddy and Nurse in a ceremony held at the College of the Canyons Performing Arts in Santa Clarita Tuesday evening.
