Deputy-Involved shooting in Aiken County near Aiken R-V Park and JD Lever Elementary School

AIKEN, SC. (WJBF) – A deputy-involved shooting after a suspect got into an altercation with an Aiken County deputy.

The incident happened just after 2 pm in the area here near Aiken R-V Park and JD Lever Elementary School.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office responded to calls of a suspect acting erratically. The suspect and deputies got into a physical altercation, resulting in one deputy being injured and the suspect being shot.

“During their interaction with the suspect, he can come back at it and start fighting with deputies. And because of that altercation with deputies, I have one deputy that’s injured, and the suspect was shot. So, we do have an officer-involved shooting,” said Captain Eric Abdullah, the Public Information Officer in Aiken County.

The school was notified, and a spokesperson for Aiken County Schools says JD Lever was placed on a hard lockdown during the incident. However, once that lockdown was lifted, all students were dismissed on a controlled release, with help from the sheriff’s office. Nobody at the school was injured.

“During the course of their approach to them, they notified the school to go ahead and secure themselves. To make sure that any action that we had didn’t overflow into the school,” said Abdullah.

As requested by Aiken County Sheriff Micheal Hunt, Sled has taken over this case, which is still ongoing.

“There is no indication so far initially we haven’t found a relation to the school at this time,” said Abdullah.

The deputy is in stable condition at the hospital.  The suspect is also hospitalized.  No word yet on his condition. Neither the identity of the suspect nor the deputy has been released at this time.

“We are just trying to get the scene stylized as quickly as possible and have minimum disruption to our community. So we can get everybody back to a normal day. Even though this is not normal,” said Abdullah.
