New details from Sheriff's Office about Jensen Beach student's 'concerning statements'

JENSEN BEACH − A Jensen Beach High School student was questioned Tuesday following a rumor regarding the student making concerning statements in the presence of other students, according to Martin County sheriff's officials.

Lt. Joe Kukuvka said Wednesday the incident started because of a rumor that spread around the school about a student being armed with a gun. A student who heard the rumor reported it to the school resource officer on campus.

Kukuvka said the student rumored to have a gun was taken from class within 6 minutes of the report, and a search was conducted for the gun.

The student denied having a gun, but said they had been having issues with a fellow student and maybe that was why the rumor started.

"There was no gun physically present, no threat to the school," Kukuvka said. No charges have been filed.

Principal Lori Vogel told parents in a robocall Tuesday afternoon that none of the statements allegedly made by the student were deemed credible and the school was working with Sheriff’s Office to investigate the situation.

She said if a student makes a statement to incite fear in others, as a joke or not, the student will face severe disciplinary action in accordance with the school's Code of Student Conduct, and face potential legal consequences.
