Detectives arrest resident who killed employee at Sacramento assisted-living home, sheriff says

Detectives arrested a man several hours after he reportedly shot and killed a woman who was working Monday morning as an employee at an assisted-living housing complex in south Sacramento.

Leslie Weikert, 66, was arrested on suspicion of homicide in Monday’s shooting death at the Cardosa Village Apartments, the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office announced early Tuesday in a news release.

Weikert was being held without bail Tuesday at the Sacramento County Main Jail. He is scheduled to appear for his arraignment hearing Wednesday afternoon in Sacramento Superior Court.

A 911 caller reported the shooting about 9:40 a.m. at the Cardosa Village Apartments at 5710 66th Ave., just west of Highway 99 and a few blocks south of Florin Road.

Homicide detectives have learned that Weikert was a resident at the housing complex and had a dispute with the woman who was an employee there. Sheriff’s officials said Weikert shot the employee multiple times during the dispute before leaving the complex.

Deputies arrived at the complex and found the woman suffering from several gunshot wounds, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Medics arrived moments later, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sacramento County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the woman’s name after her family has been notified.

The Cardosa Village Apartments is a housing complex for persons with psychiatric disabilities and their children, according to the housing complex’s website. The five-building complex has one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments. The complex is a gated community with signs out front that indicate the complex is monitored 24 hours a day by security cameras.

Detectives from the sheriff’s Major Crimes Bureau found Weikert on Monday evening and took him into custody without incident.

The website still lists as a co-sponsor Transitional Living and Community Support, Inc., which also operates under the name Hope Cooperative. But Karina Riley, an external affairs manager with Hope Cooperative, told The Sacramento Bee that Hope Cooperative has not been a co-sponsor or provided services at Cardosa Village Apartments since July 2021.

Riley said the woman who was killed in Monday’s shooting worked was a property manager and also lived at the housing complex with her partner.

“We are saddened to hear about the death of someone who was an amazing person to work with,” Riley said on Tuesday.

The Retirement Housing Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Long Beach, operates the Cardosa Village Apartments along 181 other housing facilities in 30 states and territories, according to the Sacramento complex’s website. The firm says it provides housing and services to more than 19,000 older adults, low-income families and persons with disabilities.
