What did Naples U.S Rep. Byron Donalds say at the Republican National Convention?
Hitting education first and hard, Congressman Byron Donalds pitched school choice and praised teachers at the Republican National Convention Monday night.
As a lawmaker, the Naples Republican has advocated for vouchers and charter schools, while his wife, Erika, who owns a charter school company, has been floated as a potential Trump administration education secretary. For months, there was speculation that Donalds, who frequently serves as a Trump surrogate, was on the list of potential V.P. picks, before J.D. Vance got the nod.
Here are three things Donalds told the crowd during his six-and-a-half minutes in Milwaukee.
Poor kids deserve a shot at private education
After describing how his mom and grandmother funded his schooling when public school failed him, Donalds asked “But what about those kids whose parents can’t scrape money together for private schools?” he asked. “Don’t those kids who grew up like I grew up deserve the same chance that I had? Joe Biden and Kamala Harris sent their kids to high-priced private schools (but) they trap poor kids like me in failing schools with no way out,” he said. “They say they’re pro-choice, but not if you want a choice over what your kids are taught. Donald Trump believes every parent deserves a choice and every child deserves a chance.”
The Biden administration spiked inflation
“During my first term in Congress, I served on the Budget Committee and the Small Business Committee," Donalds said. "We told Joe Biden that his so-called American Rescue plan was going to cause inflation … We were right” he said. “Joe Biden was wrong and you, the American people, are paying the price," he said. "The evidence is in. Go to any grocery store. Buy eggs. Buy beef. Buy milk. Even housing prices have skyrocketed."

The economy may be bad now, but Trump will fix it
Donalds told the crowd: “I remember as a kid my mom yelling at me, ‘Turn off that light – you don’t pay the bill ... there's a bunch of kids in America today who are hearing that from their parents. The massive inflation created by (the administration) has only made it worse … Under President Trump, all of this will change,” Donalds said; “We will make America wealthy again.”
