Dispute over barking dog in Perry County ends in gunfire, Indiana State Police say

A dispute between neighbors in St. Croix, Indiana, over a barking dog reportedly turned violent Sunday evening when a man opened fire, seriously injuring one person, state police said.

Law enforcement arrested the man who is alleged to have fired the shots, 32-year-old Tyler Richardson, of St. Croix, and he now faces six felony charges, according to the Indiana State Police, including:

  • Attempted murder, a Level 1 felony

  • Aggravated battery, a Level 3 felony

  • Battery with a deadly weapon, a Level 5 felony.

Richardson's arrest comes after the Perry County Sheriff's Office responded to the reported shooting near a home in the 12000 block of Indiana 62 on Sunday around 11:50 p.m.

"A verbal argument between neighbors about a barking dog ended with gunfire and a family member being seriously injured," an ISP news release states.

A preliminary investigation found that Richardson confronted the neighbors and later shot 32-year-old James Morris, of Tell City, Indiana, as Morris walked toward the property line to visit his in-laws at a neighboring home.

Morris was unarmed, according to the ISP.

"Three other adults and two children were nearby when the shooting occurred," the release goes on to state. "Morris was transported to Harrison County Hospital by family members before being airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital where he is currently being treated for gunshot wounds."

Richardson was in custody at the Perry County jail as of publication. A search of Richardson's name in publicly available online court records Monday afternoon did not turn up a corresponding criminal case.
