Jewelry, 20 Rolex watches and gold bars will need to be held in escrow as part of a modified bail order for one of the businessmen found guilty this week alongside Sen. Bob Menendez.

Wael Hana, an Egyptian American businessman, was found guilty in the federal bribery and corruption trial that also involved Menendez and Edgewater developer Fred Daibes. Hana's bail was modified Wednesday — a day after the jury found him guilty on six counts that include conspiracy to commit bribery.

Menendez, Hana and Daibes were found guilty on a total of 18 counts after a nine-week trial in federal court in Lower Manhattan.

What was Wael Hana's role in the scheme?

Hana's conviction was based on bribery and fraud charges stemming from efforts to use Menendez’s influence to get favorable treatment from Egyptian officials for his halal export business.

Prosecutors alleged that between 2018 and 2022, Hana provided bribes to Menendez so New Jersey's senior senator could use his “power and influence to protect, to enrich those businessmen and to benefit the government of Egypt” even as he sat as chair of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

At Hana's arraignment in the corruption trial last October, U.S. District Judge Sidney Stein repeatedly asked him if he wanted new attorneys because his counsel Lawrence Lustberg represents his co-defendant Daibes in a separate trial. Hana signed a waiver of any potential conflict of interest involving Lustberg's representation of Daibes, court documents show.

The federal indictment against Menendez, his wife, Daibes and Hana was first unsealed last September and was updated with superseding indictments three times — in October, January and March. It alleged that Menendez, his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, and three New Jersey businessmen — Hana, Daibes and Jose Uribe — were part of a bribery scheme. Menendez and his wife allegedly received, among other things, cash, gold bars and a luxury car in exchange for using his political influence.

During the trial, investigators testified that much of the cash and gold was linked to Daibes and Hana through fingerprints, DNA and serial numbers and that many of the bank envelopes stuffed with cash brimmed with bills dated after 2018.

Hana will continue to have a home detention with GPS monitoring except on weekends when he will be placed on home incarceration with GPS monitoring, with exceptions determined by the probation office.

Hana must also post or provide his attorney to hold in escrow a number of items including high-end watches and gold as additional security within 48 hours of July 17, Stein wrote in court documents.
