Driver arrested after hitting 63-year-old bicyclist in Kennewick’s Columbia Park

A 63-year-old bicyclist suffered multiple broken bones Monday when he was struck by a hit-and-run driver in the middle of Columbia Park.

The bicyclist was riding on Paul Parish Drive between Edison Street and Columbia Center Boulevard when a white Honda sedan hit him about 4:30 p.m., Officer Sebastian Castilleja told the Tri-City Herald.

The collision left the cyclist with several broken ribs along with cuts. He was treated at Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland and is expected to recover, Kennewick police said in a Facebook post.

The Honda’s driver initially stopped but then drove away before police and medical staff arrived.

Dash camera footage helped police identify the car, and then a tip led officers to later arrest suspected driver, Tyson Sturgeon, 34, of Kennewick. He was booked into the Benton County jail on investigation of felony hit-and-run.

The Kennewick police traffic unit is continuing to investigate the collision.

“We greatly appreciate the witnesses who played a critical role in the identification of the suspect which eventually led to an arrest,” Kennewick police said on Facebook.
