Driver dies in fiery crash on Sweet-Ola Highway near Emmett, Idaho State Police say
A driver died on Friday north of Emmett after their vehicle went off a road, overturned and caught fire, according to an Idaho State Police news release.
The crash took place Friday afternoon at milepost 12 of Sweet-Ola Highway. The driver “failed to negotiate a curve,” police said.
“The vehicle went off the roadway where it overturned and came to rest at the bottom of an embankment,” police said. “The vehicle then caught fire, starting a brush fire in the area surrounding the vehicle.”
The driver died at the scene. The Gem County coroner is working on identifying the deceased person, police said. The crash is under investigation.
As of early July, 2024’s traffic fatality total on state roadways was 106, exceeding the 94 deaths from the same time last year. And last year was the deadliest year in two decades, according to previous reporting.
The time period between Memorial Day to Labor Day is called the “100 Deadliest Days,” according to previous reporting. From May 24 to early July, 31 people were killed in traffic accidents in 39 days.
