Driver hits, kills pedestrian near Somerset Park in Long Beach

A driver hit and killed a man who was walking across the street near Somerset Park in Long Beach on Friday night, according to authorities.

In a news release, the Long Beach Police Department said the collision was reported at 10:38 p.m. in the area of East Carson Street and Gundry Avenue. Investigations revealed that a driver was going eastbound on Carson, just west of Gundry, when they hit a man who was crossing Carson.

The man, whose identity is pending notification of next of kin, was not walking inside of a marked crosswalk, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. Speed, distracted driving and driver impairment are not believed to be factors in the deadly collision, authorities said.
