PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A driver is on the run after crashing into the scene of another crash, hitting and killing a bystander in the process on a Washington highway Friday night.

At around 10 p.m., Clark-Cowlitz Fire Rescue crews were dispatched on reports of a car crash on Interstate 5 northbound, near milepost 17.

The crews were finishing up caring for the driver involved when one of the firetrucks was hit by a passing car. Officials say the car then careened into the scene of the original crash, narrowly missing one of the firefighters.

However, two bystanders who’d stopped to help during the car crash were hit and one of them was killed. The other was critically injured and taken to a hospital.
