East Brunswick Police Department hiring certified, non-certified officers — how to apply

EAST BRUNSWICK – The township is looking for individuals interested in working for the Police Department as an officer, currently accepting applications for both certified and non-certified police officers.

Several employment opportunities are available including positions in Patrol Operations, SWAT, Detective Bureau, Special Operations (Traffic), Motorcycle Unit, Community Policing Unit, Community Response Unit or as a School Resource Officer.

Frequently voted the "Best" Police Department in Middlesex County, the township police department said it prides itself on proudly serving the community with "Honor, Integrity and Public Trust." The township itself is home to approximately 49,000 residents.

A non-refundable application fee of $100 will be charged to all applicants. The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m., Sept. 18. The recruitment process will be limited to the first 150 applicants.

The hiring process includes several steps and tests, including a physical test consisting of a 1.5-mile run, 300-meter sprint, pushups, and sit-ups administered by the East Brunswick Police Department, a written test administered by the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police and an oral interview conducted by East Brunswick Police Department. A background investigation, medical examination, psychological screening and drug testing also are required.

Applicants also will undergo Police Academy training unless already certified.

The physical agility test will be held on Sept. 22 at the East Brunswick High School track. The written test will be scheduled on Sept. 25 for candidates who successfully pass the physical test. The oral interviews are tentatively scheduled for Oct. 2 and Oct. 3 for top scoring candidates.

Besides passing a written and physical indicator test, applicants must be a citizen of the U.S., a resident of the state of New Jersey, and possess a valid New Jersey driver's license at the time of appointment. They must be no less than 18 years of age, or more than 35 years of age, at the time of appointment. In accordance with state statutes, age exemptions for military service and prior law enforcement service may be granted to meet the maximum age standards.

Also, applicants must have the ability to read, write, and speak the English language clearly and intelligently as well as possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Applicants will be required to show proficiency in writing and basic computer skills. They must have a minimum of an associate degree or two years of full-time college credits (60 credits) from an accredited college or university or 30 college credits from an accredited college and have completed at least two years of full-time active duty military service with Honorable Discharge. Military service must have been completed within last three years to be eligible for this option. Credits or degrees must be recognized by the American Council on Education as listed in the Accredited Institutions of Post-Secondary Education.

Applicants must have visual acuity 20/100 in each eye without artificial correction, 20/30 corrected. Must have normal color perception, depth perception, and peripheral vision. Must have auditory acuity at or below 25db in each ear. They must be physically capable of meeting the required firearms qualifications mandated by the Attorney General guidelines. Must be psychologically fit to perform all the duties of a police officer. Must meet the requirements set forth in the job description for a police officer and pass a comprehensive background investigation.

Successful candidates will be given conditional offers of employment and then must pass a urinalysis as well as comprehensive medical and psychological examinations.

Those who are hired are sent to the Police Academy for an approximately 22-week-long unless the applicant is appropriately certified by the Police Training Commission (PTC). Upon successful completion of the Academy, officers are assigned to the Patrol Division and to a Field Training Officer for an additional 16 weeks.
