Eggs that weren’t meant to be sold are recalled from Costco on salmonella concerns
The bad news for Costco shoppers is there’s a recall of organic eggs sold under the big box retailer’s Kirkland Signature brand because they might be contaminated by salmonella.
The good news is this is a relatively confined recall — 10,800 cartons over five states.
Recalled Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture 24-count eggs have UPC code No. 9661910680, Julian code 327, a use by date of Jan. 6, 2025 and went to Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama or Tennessee. The codes and use by date are on the side of the plastic carton.
Handsome Brook Farms made the eggs for Costco.
“The recall was initiated after the company determined that eggs not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging,” Handsome’s FDA-posted recall notice said. “Additional supply chain controls and retraining are being put in place to prevent recurrence.”
If you have these eggs, return them to Costco for a full refund or at least throw them deep into the garbage, where curious animals can’t get them. Salmonella is the most common foodborne illness, according to the CDC, infecting about 1.35 million people in the United States each year. Diarrhea, vomiting and stomachaches are the most common symptoms. In less than 1% of cases, hospitalization is required. Children under 5, adults over 65 and those with damaged immune systems are the most vulnerable to salmonella’s worst effects, including death.
