Elderly East Bay man beaten unconscious after confronting would-be porch pirate: police

(KRON) — A 77-year-old man was walking his dog Wednesday afternoon in Richmond. What should have been a rather routine and peaceful stroll on the 1000 block of Lassen Street turned out to be quite the opposite.

Around 2:47 p.m., the elderly man noticed a young man, approximately 20 years old, trying to steal packages from a neighbor’s porch, according to the Richmond Police Department. In a seeming attempt to be a Good Samaritan, the elderly man confronted the young man.

The encounter turned violent as the young man attacked and beat the 77-year-old unconscious, Richmond police said. The victim was taken to a medical facility where he is currently in stable condition.

The victim’s cell phone and digital camera were missing, police said.
