Election 2024: Candidate deadline passes. Who's taking first step to run in Newport County

Election season has hit Rhode Island.

The deadline for candidates to file their intent to run for local office ended at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26. While the presidential election remains a main focus for many, changes are coming to local positions of power as a handful of councilors and committee members have declined to file or run for a different office.

Here is everyone who filed by Wednesday.

NEWPORT

City Council

Ward 1

This ward encompasses the city’s North End. Councilor Angela Lima currently holds this position, but announced on June 18 that she would not seek reelection after three terms in the seat.

Hugo Deascentis Jr.

Charles Pattavina

Ellen Pinnock

Ward 2

This ward covers much of the middle portion of the city, with the exception of the main commercial centers around Thames Street. It includes the Broadway and Kay Street Neighborhoods and has been held by Charles Holder, who has decided to run as a at-large candidate this year.

Lynn Underwood Ceglie

Matthew James Grant

Ward 3

The largest ward by land area alone, Ward Three covers most of America’s Cup, Thames Street, Salve Regina University and the entire southern portion of the island starting at Narragansett Avenue, where it borders Ward 2.

The incumbent, David Carlin III, is the sole candidate for this ward, and is vying for a second term. He ran unopposed in 2022 after longtime Ward 3 councilor Kate Leonard pulled out of the election.

Townwide/At Large

There are four at-large city council seats which, unlike the three ward-specific seats, are responsible for representing the interests of residents throughout the city. Incumbents are marked by asterisks.
