Elon Musk donated to a pro-Trump super PAC, Bloomberg reported
Elon Musk donated an undisclosed amount of money to America PAC, sources told Bloomberg.
The billionaire previously said on X that he is not donating money to any candidates.
But Musk has been critical of President Joe Biden and has supported right-wing causes.
Elon Musk has donated an undisclosed amount of money to America PAC, a super political action committee working to elect Donald Trump in 2024, sources familiar with the donation told Bloomberg.
A Trump campaign spokesperson did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.
Musk has not publicly endorsed a candidate for the 2024 race.
The billionaire previously stated on X that he had no plans to donate to any US presidential candidate.
"Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President," he wrote in March.
But as BI's Peter Kafka noted, Musk's statement made no indication if those plans will later change or if he was merely being technical by saying he won't directly fund a campaign.
Bloomberg reported that the donation was "a sizable amount."
A super PAC allows a group to raise an unlimited amount of money from corporations and other donors but the money cannot directly go to a political candidate.
While Musk has been shy to publicly endorse a presidential candidate, the billionaire has been open about his qualms with Democrats and the Biden administration.
Musk has repeatedly used his social media platform to criticize President Joe Biden's handling on immigration and a proposal to tax the ultra-wealthy, among other policy matters.
His choice to speak out on hot-button political issues marked a shift from his previous stance of keeping an arms-length distance from politics. Musk once said in 2015 that he gets "involved in politics as little as possible."
There also was a period when Musk was skeptical of Trump, calling a potential Trump GOP nomination "embarrassing" in 2015, and was hopeful about a Biden presidency.
"I'm super fired up that the new administration is focused on climate," the Tesla CEO said in January 2021. "I feel very optimistic about the future of sustainable energy with the new administration."
But in recent years, Musk's relationship with the Biden administration appeared to sour and the billionaire has come to embrace the Republican Party and Trump's politics.
An analysis by Business Insider found that Musk gave more money to Republicans than Democrats between 2002 and 2022, donating $574,500 to the GOP and $542,000 to Democrats.
His biggest single contribution to a political candidate in that time period was former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel, a Democrat, in 2015.
Musk did not respond to a request for comment.
