Emma Stone is SO over “perfect” Instagram posts — and she has a valid reason

If you’ve been waiting anxiously for Emma Stone to get on social media, don’t hold your breath. The star of the upcoming film musical La La Land recently sat down with Elle to explain her disdain for everyone’s seemingly perfect lives online. Stone said that she’s so over the “perfect” Instagram life. The facade needs to end.

“When you see people like, ‘This is the best life ever! I couldn’t be happier,'” Stone said about the pictures she sees on Instagram, “you’re like, ‘Shut up, that is not true.'” We’ve never related to anything more.

Just like anything else on the internet, we must take into account that what we see has most likely been altered or staged in some way. When we forget about that, we start feeling sorry for ourselves and feel like we’re missing out on something that doesn’t even exist.

Stone went off social media two years ago after realizing that she didn’t want or need validation from strangers. “It’s that need to be liked, that need to be seen, that need to be validated, in a way, through no one that you know,” she said during an EPIX roundtable discussion in 2014. “It seems like everyone’s cultivating their lives on Instagram or on different forms of social media, and what pictures looks best of their day.”

She continued, “It’s almost impossible to find someone that’s not, in some way, on the internet.”

Emma Stone probably has the right idea. If we all took a step back from the world of social media, we’d be a lot happier and confident in ourselves — after all, there have been numerous studies that show the link between unhappiness and excessive use of social media. So, preach on, Emma. You know what’s best.
