Employees to return to work at Decatur GE plant days after deadly accident

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) – Employees of the Decatur GE plant will return to work late Monday following a deadly workplace accident last week.

According to GE spokesperson Julie Wood, the plant will reopen starting with the third shift Monday evening. Employees will be paid for the missed day this week. Wood added that five to ten counselors will be available for each shift the next few days, including “additional support on an ongoing basis.”

On Wednesday, an employee, 58-year-old Rodney Terry, was killed in an industrial accident at the plant refrigeration plant. Wood said the first shift was sent home, and both the second and third shifts were canceled out of respect for the Decatur team.

A statement from GE following the incident said, “As we work to understand what happened today [Wednesday], including bringing in resources to help us review the operations and equipment, we feel it is in the best interest of our team to cancel production for the rest of the week. Employees will be paid for this time off.”

The company is working with local authorities to determine the cause of the accident. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
