As the summer days wane and the anticipation of a new school year begins, families are getting back into their routines: early bedtimes, limited screen time, and designated homework areas. While these habits are major contributors to students’ success, ensuring students have the school supplies they need is one of the most important factors — starting with their backpacks.

Having the right supplies boosts students' confidence and independence, allowing them to excel academically without relying on others. Equipped with the necessary resources, students can face the school day with assurance and readiness.

However, for many families, the start of the school year brings a heavy financial burden. The long list and cost of essential back-to-school items can quickly add up, causing stress and anxiety, especially with rising living costs and school expenses.

Recognizing the significance of backpacks in contributing to student success, I have collaborated with various organizations since 2015 to enhance access to school supplies for students in our Senate district. Our office annually reviews the Economically Disadvantaged Status Reports from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) to pinpoint the schools and students in Senate District 29 that are most in need of assistance.

This year, I am excited to host two of my 10th Annual Back-to-School Backpack Giveaways at Douglass Elementary School and Tornillo Independent School District, where we will be donating over 1,200 backpacks to eligible and enrolled students, ensuring they start the school year well-equipped and ready for success.

We hope to alleviate some stress by providing students with backpacks, allowing students and parents to focus on education without additional worries. Beyond the practical benefits, this backpack giveaway sends a profound message to our children: "You are important. Your education matters. We believe in your potential!'"

With the support of various community and corporate partners, we have successfully collected thousands of backpacks. We are working together to distribute these vibrant and colorful bags, ensuring students start the school year well-prepared.

Every student in our community deserves the opportunity to start the school year with the confidence to dream bigger, work harder, and achieve more!

Wishing all our students, teachers, and support staff a successful and enriching 2024-25 school year!

State Sen. César Blanco, D-El Paso, represents District 29.
