Evacuation relaxed after forward progress stopped on pair of fires in Placer County

A fire that prompted mandatory evacuations Friday near the Placer County town of Newcastle has been stopped at nine acres, authorities said.

Forward progress was stopped on the Lehi Fire just before 8 p.m. after the fire sparked near Lehi Lane, just north of Highway 193, just after 4 p.m., said Cal Fire’s Nevada-Yuba-Placer unit.

At least one structure was involved in the fire, Cal Fire said.

The Placer County Sheriff’s Office lifted evacuations in the area except for Lehi Lane.

Cal Fire NEU in a 6:20 p.m. update said investigators determined the Lehi Fire was caused by lawn mowing in dry grass.

Another fire to the northeast, dubbed the Weimar Fire, also prompted evacuations for about three hours, according to the Sheriff’s Office. The fire started just before 2 p.m. but prompted deputies to go “door to door evacuating residents in the area” around 5 p.m.

After the fire’s forward progress was halted, evacuations on Canyon Way near Interstate 80 were lifted about 8 p.m.

The Weimar Fire charred about three acres, Cal Fire NEU said.
