Evacuation orders lifted for areas near Sandhurst Fire

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — On Sunday night, the Salt Lake City Police Department informed residents that all previous evacuation orders that were associated with the Sandhurst Fire had been lifted.

Officials warned that re-entry was conditional, and said residents should continue to be prepared to evacuate if needed. Residents were also advised to follow Utah Fire Info on social media for more updates.

Officials with the Sandhurst Fire incident management team were working on drafting the conditions that would reinstate an evacuation order on Sunday night, SLCPD said in a press release.

“After strong efforts by firefighting resources on the Sandhurst Fire, containment has been reached on the southern perimeter,” police said in the release.

SLCPD said it consulted with the incident commander over the fire, and the fire managers “feel confident” that the Sandhurst Fire would not progress toward the nearby community.

Officials explained which evacuation orders were lifted, saying the following:

While the evacuation orders have been lifted, non-residents are still being asked to avoid the area to ensure firefighting resources are not inhibited.

Trail closures near the fire — for Ensign Peak, Tunnel Springs, and the part of Bonneville Shoreline Trail closest to the fire — were still in effect at the time the evacuation orders were lifted.

According to the Utah Wildfire Dashboard, the human-caused Sandhurst Fire was estimated to be at a size of 204 acres and 10% contained as of Sunday night.
