Father charged with killing man who shot his son during a dispute in Cahokia Heights

A 62-year-old man has been charged in the slaying of one of two people shot to death Friday afternoon at a Cahokia Heights home, according to Detective DeMarius Thomas of the Cahokia Heights Police Department.

Louis E. Hopkins of Cahokia Heights is accused of first-degree murder and felon in possession of a weapon in the shooting death of Anthony Andrews, 41, of East St. Louis, in the front yard at 123 Judith Lane in Cahokia Heights, Thomas said Sunday. The other person found dead in the yard was Hopkins’ son, Torian T. Hopkins, 40, who lived at the Judith Lane address.

Louis Hopkins was present in the front yard of the Judith Lane home when Andrews ``had a disturbance” with Torian T. Hopkins, according to Thomas. Andrews and Torian Hopkins exchanged gunfire, and Torian Hopkins was killed, Thomas said.

Torian’s father then shot Andrews, Thomas said.

The detective did not reveal what the dispute was about between Andrews and the younger Hopkins.

St. Clair County Coroner Calvin Dye Sr. said Torian T. Hopkins and Andrews and were pronounced dead at the scene at 3:40 p.m. and 3:45 p.m. , respectively.

Louis E. Hopkins is being held in the St. Clair County Jail.

Thomas thanked the Cahokia Heights Police Department, Sauget Police Department, St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department and agents of the Metro-East Auto Theft Task Force and Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis for their assistance.
