Federal inmate at Leavenworth dies Monday night

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — On Monday evening, an inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) at Leavenworth died.

On Monday around 8 p.m., Sean Evan Thomas Bad Bear was found unresponsive at the correctional facility.

According to the Department of Justice, responding employees started life-saving measures. EMS was requested while life-saving efforts continued.

Bad Bear was pronounced dead by EMS personnel at the facility. The DOJ did not reveal his cause of death. No employees or other incarcerated individuals were injured and the public was never in danger.

Bad Bear pleaded guilty to assault by strangulation of an intimate partner and dating partner in September 2020. Bad Bear was sentenced to 10 months.

He had been in custody at FCI Leavenworth since March 21, 2024.
