Federal Prison Oversight Act supported by QCA prison union

A new federal prison oversight bill on President Biden’s desk has support from American Federation of Government Employees Local 4070, the union representing prison workers at Thomson Federal Prison.

The bill would create an independent ombudsman to take and investigate complaints about the conduct of inmates or prison workers. Thomson employees have been pushing for changes complaining that the Federal Bureau of Prisons hasn’t responded to their concerns quickly, especially about inmates exposing themselves in a sexual manner. Thomson Prison is dealing with a staffing shortage of more than 120 workers. The situation got worse after the Bureau of Prisons removed their retention bonuses. The union expects it to be difficult to hire people until that pay is restored.
