‘We feel extremely safe’, says Fresno Republican attending the party’s national convention in Milwaukee

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The Republican National Convention kicked off Monday in Milwaukee, just two days after the assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump.

A big topic for discussion as the republicans file in is security.

11 Fresno officers at the 2024 Republican National Convention

Milwaukee officials state nearly 4,500 law enforcement officers have traveled to the city to provide mutual aid at the convention, this includes 11 Fresno Police Officers.

“We feel extremely safe,” said Guillermo Moreno, California Alternate Delegate.

Moreno, a Fresno Conservative and radio host, is in attendance.

“This is my second convention, things are definitely different this time around,” Moreno said.

He says they have closed nearby highways, and the United States Secret Service and Homeland Security are present, along with state troopers and city law enforcement from out of state.

The Fresno Police Department says they were contacted in March of 2023 to provide mutual aid.

“We got checked at the hotel for our bags and everything had to be clear bag, soon as we got off, they checked us again, and then during TSA we had to turn over our bags and our sports coats, it’s probably about two times more extensive than what you would see at an airport,” Moreno said.

Moreno says Saturday’s events have changed the conference’s tone.

“Everybody pretty much just got amped up and more solidified as a mission that, ‘Hey, we got work to do this week and we all got to be there.’”

He believes the assassination attempt has unified Republicans.

“Even the people that want to be classified as maybe the Never Trumpers, I mean, they’re all united,” Moreno said. “Really, the entire delegation is on one foot, which I really haven’t seen over the last couple of years.”

The convention will conclude on Thursday and the Fresno officers will return home the next day.
