FHP: Man dies in single-vehicle crash in Jefferson County wreck

A 29-year-old man died in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Jefferson County, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The driver was traveling on Highway 90 east of North Main Street just before 2 p.m. when the car drifted into the grassy shoulder and hit a tree. Witnesses told FHP troopers that "there appeared to be no breaking or steering."

"Witnesses stopped to render care," FHP said. "There was significant injury to (the driver) and first responders arrived shortly thereafter." FHP was assisted by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson County Fire Rescue.

Just an hour before, FHP troopers responded to an incident around 1 p.m. on Interstate 10 in Leon County involving a tractor-trailer that jack-knifed and blocked westbound traffic.

A blue Freightliner Cascadia truck was traveling too fast in inclement weather, according to FHP, causing the driver to quickly run off the roadway in an attempt to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of it.

"Over 100 gallons of fuel spilled from the vehicle causing the roadway to become covered in fuel," FHP said. "Agencies responded and assisted in cleanup including the Department of Environmental Protection, Florida Department of Transportation and the Tallahassee Fire Department."

All lanes were cleaned and reopened by 3:30 p.m., FHP said, and only the Freightliner was involved in the crash. The driver had minor injuries and was cited for careless driving.
