Residents return after evacuating for Washington County grass fire

UPDATE 7/1 5:30 p.m. — Officials spoke with ABC4.com the day after a fire in the town of Central, Utah, caused some residents to be evacuated.

The residents were able to be safely relocated, but the fire caused some damage to one home, officials said on Monday. Utah Fire Info said the updated size of the fire was 9.6 acres, and it was 100 percent contained.

Officials said the fire was human-caused but is still under investigation.

UPDATE 6/30 7:30 p.m. — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said the evacuation order was lifted at 7:16 p.m. for residents who were being affected by the fire in the town of Central on Sunday.

“Fire crews will still be in the area working and we ask everyone please be patient with them and give them room to work,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media update.

The sheriff’s office also expressed gratitude for those who assisted with the situation.

UPDATE 6/30 7:05 p.m. — The Washington County Sheriff’s Office posted an update on social media to tell residents where they could go after evacuating.

“The LDS church in Vey is being opened for temporary shelter for those [affected] by the evacuation order,” the sheriff’s office said in the update on Sunday night. “Current evacuation order issued between Center Street and Mule Deer Rd, and east of Mountain View Dr.”

ORIGINAL STORY: Fire sparks in Washington County, threatens structures

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Utah (ABC4) — A “structure/brush fire” sparked near Center Street in the town of Central — in Washington County — on Sunday afternoon.

According to Utah Fire Info, the fire was discovered just before 4 p.m. and had spread to about 10 to 15 acres around 5 p.m.

Utah Fire Info said structures were being threatened by the blaze, and multiple resources were responding to the scene. According to Dammeron Valley Fire and Rescue, residents in the area of the fire had been ordered to evacuate.

Officials with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office posted on social media and asked residents to avoid the area near Center Street.

Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue also posted on social media to say that Tender 46 and Engine 42 were responding to what officials called a “structure/brush fire.”

“Several resources throughout the county are assisting on this fire,” Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue said.

Fire crews and deputies responded to the scene from numerous agencies, including Santa Clara – Ivins Fire and Rescue and the St. George Fire Department.

Officials did not immediately disclose what caused the fire.

There is no further information at this time.
