Firework thrown into gas station, causing explosion; police seek suspect

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two employees are injured after police say a man threw a lit firework inside of a Parkway Village gas station Monday night.

On July 15 around 10 p.m., officers responded to the scene at the Marathon gas station on South Perkins Road where a firework exploded inside.

A customer was checking out at the counter, while two employees worked nearby. That is when a male suspect appeared in the doorway, pulled a firework from his pocket, lit it, and hurled it toward the counter.

The suspect then left the scene in a red sedan.

The arson attack reportedly caused $4,000 – $5,000 in damage and now has police searching for a suspect.

Surveillance footage captured what the gas station manager described as a terrifying incident.

“Yes of course it’s scary, not just for her but for everybody. If you are shopping in Walmart Kroger or a gas station and someone throws a firework inside the store that’s terrible. Yeah, that’s scary because what can you do? Nothing,” said Alan Ozrail, store manager.

Ozrail says he is glad the fire did not reach the top of the roof.

“I hoped the fire didn’t go up to the ceiling. If it catches the ceiling the whole building would’ve been burned,” he said. “That’s why we hired security. We have security that comes here now every day.”

MPD says no arrests have been made at this time.
