CHILLICOTHE — Every day over 20 veterans commit suicide.

While you go about your day, working, going to school or doing anything 20 men and women who served their country die. In a year there will be over 9,000 current and former service members who commit suicide for a variety of reasons.

First Capital Ruck 22 in Chillicothe hopes to help bring that number to zero. The veteran suicide prevention and awareness group is working to bring a free event to the area on Sept. 28 in Yoctangee Park. The group helps to connect all veterans with resources around the area.

"We are trying to impact veteran's lives," said Loren Mcguire with First Capital Ruck 22.

This event will feature things for the whole family including a 5K and 22K walk and run, vendors, food trucks, Columbus Zoo animals, magicians, live music and more.

A special challenge coin featuring the First Capital Ruck 22 logo and motto, "One Is Too Many", will also be available for purchase at this event. The coin is shaped like the state of Ohio and has the American Flag on the back.

To honor veterans the event will hold a veterans ceremony starting at noon where they will highlight what they do in the community while also sharing statistics surrounding veterans suicide. Outside of the September event First Capital Ruck 22 puts on various events, including fishing and camping retreats, that allow veterans to connect with each other and find a community that understands them.

If you or someone you know is a veteran going through a crisis call 988 for confidential support. Those looking to donate to First Capital Ruck 22 or become a vendor at the upcoming event can contact them online.
