When is the first day of school 2024 for Asheville, Buncombe, Henderson, Western NC districts?

Summer is here, and so is all the fun stuff that goes with it.

While we enjoy things like baseball, outdoor activities, camps, swimming, vacations, blockbuster movies and lazin' around, some might have a nagging feeling that something is right around the corner.

Try as we might, we can't hold off the start of school. With the 2024-25 school year approaching, here's what to know about when sessions begin.

First day of school in Western North Carolina districts 2024-25

NC school calendar law

The General Assembly passed a law in 2012 that mandated N.C. public schools start no earlier than the Monday closest to Aug. 26 and end no later than the Friday closest to June 11. Schools can apply for a weather-related calendar waiver if they have been closed because of bad weather at least eight full school days per year during four of the previous 10 years. If waiver is approved, the start date can be no earlier than the Monday closest to Aug. 19.

As we can see above, not every district follows those guidelines.

Last day of school in WNC 2024-25

Barring extensions because of an unusually high number of snow days or other circumstances, here's when schools are expected to have their last days in 2025.

  • Asheville City Schools: Friday, June 6.

  • Avery County Schools: Thursday, May 29.

  • Buncombe County Schools: Tuesday, June 10.

  • Cherokee County Schools: Friday, May 30.

  • Clay County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Graham County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Haywood County Schools: Saturday, May 31.

  • Henderson County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Jackson County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Macon County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Madison County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • McDowell County Schools: Friday, June 6.

  • Mitchell County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Polk County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Swain County Schools: Friday, May 23.

  • Transylvania County Schools: Friday, June 6.

  • Watauga County Schools: Monday, June 2.

  • Yancey County Schools: Friday, May 23.
