Florida driver's licenses, ID cards to add random numbers starting July 31. Here's why.
As of July 31, your driver's license number is about to get a lot more random.
A new statute passed by the Florida Legislature to improve security and prevent fraud requires that all distinguishing numbers assigned to a driver's license or ID card must include at least four randomly generated numbers, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) said in a release Friday.
"While the license or identification card format will remain the same, a different formula utilizing randomization will now be used to determine the driver license numbers assigned to a customer, the FLHSMV said.
"Customers renewing or replacing their license or identification cards in person or online will be issued a new number. Those applying for a first-time license or identification card will be issued a card that meets the new statutory requirements."
Can I renew my driver's license online in Florida?
Yes! You can renew at MyDMV Portal. You still have to go in person if:
You renewed online last time.
Your existing driver's license or state ID is not REAL ID compliant.
You want to update your photo.
You want to change your name using an original or certified court order or marriage certificate.
You want to add or remove a designation or have a court order to update your credential.
You're getting a Florida driver's license or ID card for the first time.
You have a commercial driver's license.
Your license has the word “TEMPORARY” printed on it.
What are REAL IDs? Do I need one?
Odds are good you already have one. REAL IDs comply with the REAL ID Act passed in 2005 that established minimum security standards for getting a license anywhere across the country.
As of May 7, 2025, every state resident must present a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card (or a valid passport or passport card) to board a commercial aircraft within the United States.
If you've received a new or renewed Florida driver's license or ID since January 2010, you're already good to go.
