Floridians need flood relief money. Take it from Ron DeSantis' personal police force.

Get flood money from DeSantis' police

Counties, cities, villages and neighborhoods across our state are all on the nightly news pleading for assistance with never-before-experienced flooding problems.

However, Tallahassee says there is no funding to address this crisis. Yet Gov. Ron DeSantis has $107 million in the budget for the Florida State Guard, his personal force (not our National Guard).

Most Floridians don’t know DeSantis has his own, taxpayer-funded Guard.

I suggest legislators should redirect the millions to install and improve proper drainage for the people.

Immigrants provide care and love

Wow! Immigrants devouring cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio! Cooked, raw, garnished, on rolls or plain?

Former President Donald Trump’s outrageous lies are appalling enough, but what's even more appalling is that so many of his followers believe these lies.

In 15 years as a hospice and nursing home chaplain in Florida, I have been moved by the care and love that our immigrant aides and nurses give to the elderly and dying.

Without these folks from other countries – including Haiti – our hospitals and care facilities could not function.

Recently, the Herald-Tribune published an article quoting a retired Border Patrol agent who said the following:

“Eighty-seven percent of the illegal aliens who cross that border are just coming to improve their lives. Thirteen percent are people we don’t want here. … Helping the 87%, I think, is a noble cause.”

Indeed.

Why we should overturn abortion ban

I’m voting “yes” on Amendment 4 and want to share why. Floridians deserve to know what’s at stake.

Florida’s current abortion law is extreme. It is a six-week abortion ban, which is before most women learn they are pregnant. The result is effectively a total abortion ban.

This extreme ban has no real exceptions for rape, incest or protecting the heath or life of the pregnant woman. It puts pregnant women’s lives at risk.

My vote "yes" on 4 is a vote to protect the freedom of women to keep private reproductive health care decisions between themselves and their doctor, without interference from politicians.

Jesi Cason was among the demonstrators who gathered in downtown Fort Myers on Monday, April 10, 2023, to protest bills in the Florida Legislature to ban abortion after six weeks gestation.

My vote "yes" on 4 is a vote to protect the ability of medical professionals to provide reproductive health care that saves women’s lives in emergency situations and not risk the loss of their licenses or potential jail time.

My vote "yes" on 4 is a vote to prevent politicians from forcing women to carry to term the result of a rape or incest.

Baby Trump can’t handle rejection

Recently former President Donald Trump responded to singer Taylor Swift endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris by posting the following: “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

Protesters in London fly the famous 20-foot-tall Baby Trump balloon, which wears a diaper and holds a cellphone.

Where is that supersize balloon of Baby Trump in a diaper? What a whiny baby!

Trump hasn’t got a gracious bone in his body.

Why not just say this is America and everyone is entitled to his or her opinion? Instead, Trump acts like a 2-year-old.

It's another reason why he is unfit for office.

Harris avoids sharing her policies

I don’t understand why it is that when Vice President Kamala Harris is asked to explain her political policies, she ignores the question and talks about her childhood.

Vice President Kamala Harris speaks at Northwestern High School in Detroit during a Labor Day Rally on Monday, Sept. 2, 2024.

I pray Harris never has the opportunity to meet with Vladimir Putin or Xi Jinping to discuss world issues, but if she does, I’m sure that they will walk away with full knowledge of her youth – and even her time working at McDonald's.
