Former detective under investigation for DWI charge resigns from San Angelo police force

An off-duty police officer arrested on a DWI charge has resigned from the San Angelo Police Department, according to a media release.

Former Detective James Hernandez handed in his resignation Monday. Hernandez served with the SAPD for 17 years.

Hernandez was free Friday from Tom Green County Jail on a $1,500 bond for a charge of DWI-second offense, according to jail records.

Anyone charged with a crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Hernandez was arrested on a DWI charge during the early morning hours of July 4, prompting an immediate internal review, according to the Wednesday media release.

"The San Angelo Police Department takes such matters very seriously, and the actions of one officer do not reflect the values or conduct of the department or its other officers," SAPD officials said in the media release. "The department remains committed to transparency and accountability."

A trooper with the Texas Department Public Safety pulled Hernandez over for a traffic stop and made the arrest.
