(KRON) — Former U.S. Representative Jackie Speier took to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday to announce she had been diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I have personal news that I want to share with you because we can all learn from it,” wrote the former long-time Bay Area Democratic representative. “I just became one of the 300,000 women per year who are diagnosed with breast cancer.”

The good news, Speier said, is that her condition was diagnosed early. Speier, who formerly represented California’s 14th congressional district, said she’d undergone a successful lumpectomy on Tuesday.

“I had a mammogram in June of 2023 and was scheduled for one in June this year,” Speier said. “I almost didn’t go because of summer activities. Thank goodness I didn’t cancel.”

Speier said she was treated at UCSF, where she received “excellent care.”

“The lesson here is, please be diligent about your own screenings and don’t skip them,” she added.

Speier, a survivor of the 1978 Jonestown massacre in Guyana, was first elected to Congress in 2008 and served until 2023.
