Former Republican Massachusetts governor endorses Kamala Harris over Donald Trump
Republican and former governor of Massachusetts Bill Weld endorses Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential race.
Weld endorses Harris with several other conservative public figures as part of a Harris campaign effort known as "Republicans for Harris," which was launched on August 4. The effort aims to win over Republican voters who are dismissive of former President Donald Trump.
A Republican who worked as an assistant U.S. attorney general under President Ronald Reagan and subsequently served as Massachusetts governor, Weld backs "Republicans for Harris."
Other Republican voices endorsing Harris along with Weld are former Virginia Representative Denver Riggleman and former Trump administration press secretary Stephanie Grisham.
When was Bill Weld governor of MA?
Weld was governor of Massachusetts from 1991 to 1997, triumphing in 1990 and becoming the first Republican to win the office in 20 years.
He also joined Gary Johnson on the presidential ticket for the Libertarian Party in 2016.
What has Bill Weld said about Donald Trump
Weld spoke to the Enterprise in 2020 ahead of that year's election during his brief run in the primaries. In it, he was critical of Trump.
"I think we have to keep our eye on the ball here," Weld said. "Certainly, I’d rather have a centrist Democrat than President Trump."
