Former Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) examined how GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump’s selection of Sen. JD Vance (R-Ohio) as his 2024 running mate reflects on Vance’s character.

Vance has turned from being one of Trump’s fiercest critics to one of his staunchest supporters and now claims he didn’t realize how great a president he’d turn out to be, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace and McCaskill noted on Monday.

“I got news for everybody,” McCaskill told Wallace during a discussion about the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where Vance’s status as vice presidential candidate was confirmed.

“JD Vance doesn’t believe he was a great president,” she continued. “I don’t know any Republican senators that believe that Donald Trump was a great president.”

McCaskill noted how the so-called adults in the White House who tempered Trump’s worst instincts during his first administration wouldn’t be there during his second potential presidency.

“Those people are all gone, and the idea that they picked this guy shows that they’re sure that he would never stand for the Constitution before he would stand for Donald Trump,” she said.

After all, McCaskill noted, Vance “has said that had he been the vice president, he wouldn’t have certified those electors” on Jan. 6, 2021, unlike then-Vice President Mike Pence, who chose democracy over his boss.
