Former Vice President Mike Pence on Monday said President Joe Biden “made the right decision for our country” following Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race this weekend.

Pence, in a post on X, said he thanked Biden for “putting the interests of our Nation ahead of his own.”

The former Indiana governor called for leaders of both parties to “project calm and send a message of strength and resolve to America’s friends and enemies” following Biden’s withdrawal from the race and the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump earlier this month.

“Whatever the state of our politics, the American people are strong and our American military stands ready to defend our freedom and our vital national interests anywhere in the world,” Pence said in the X post.

Pence served as Trump’s vice president during his 2016 and 2020 campaigns. But he fell out of favor with Trump and his supporters in 2021 when he refused to block the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, something Pence said he never had the authority to do.

Trump last week tapped Ohio U.S. Sen. JD Vance to be his running mate for the 2024 presidential race.
