NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Ride New Orleans, in collaboration with several other organizations, is developing a program to offer free transit passes to Orleans Parish residents ages 16 to 24.

According to RIDE, it, along with the Regional Transit Authority, the New Orleans Public Library and the New Orleans Children and Youth Planning Board, is working to develop and implement the Opportunity Pass pilot program.

The program is scheduled to be open for enrollment in September and will reportedly allow participants to sign up at any New Orleans public library to receive a free transit pass for the 12-month pilot period.

Funding for the pilot program is coming from a $2.5 million allocation in American Rescue Plan funds that the New Orleans City Council approved in 2023.

Approval to authorize the spending of funds is still pending for RIDE and the RTA from the CAO’s office of Cooperative Endeavor Agreements. RIDE requested that the CAO expedite remaining reviews of the agreements so that the program will be ready by its launch date.
