French Fire burning mere blocks from Mariposa’s town center
MARIPOSA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – The French Fire in Mariposa has doubled in size since initial reports on Thursday, Cal Fire announced Friday.
Crews reported on Friday that the French Fire had grown to 908 acres. Firefighters made progress overnight and were able to contain 15% of the fire, according to Cal Fire.
Officials say the fire, which started Thursday evening near French Camp Road, is now burning parallel to town on the eastern side of the community.
As of Friday afternoon, a number of areas that were subject to evacuation orders have been reduced to fully open, according to the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office. That includes:
Jones Road, including all side roads (excluding the roadway to the high school baseball fields/track)
Campbell Way
Dexter View
Pine Street
Smith Road (from Highway 140 to Hospital Road)
Hospital Road (from Smith Road to just past John C. Fremont, including St. Andrews Road)
Williams Road
The John C. Fremont Hospital, Yosemite Inn, and Quality Inn in-shelter status has also been lifted.
Additionally, Highway 140 was opened to Yosemite National Park with no restrictions.
According to Cal Fire, three injuries have been reported as of Friday night, as well as four destroyed structures.
The cause of the French Fire is under investigation.
