Wilburn Eugene Mott, a Navy veteran and Pflugerville's first state high school athletic champion, died on Saturday. He was 75.

Mott excelled in all sports at Pflugerville High School before graduating in 1967, including winning the gold medal for shot put at the state high school track and field meet.

After completing high school, Wilburn joined the U.S. Navy, where he served his country during the Vietnam War. He went on to be a successful salesman in the wholesale beauty supply industry across Central Texas. It was during that time that he met and married his wife, Barbara.

Wilburn loved spending time with his family and friends, reminiscing of old times growing up in Pflugerville, according to his obituary. His favorite hobby was working on his electric train collection. He also enjoyed going to Texas high school football games and track meets.

He lived in Pflugerville for 72 years before moving to Leander. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, son Barry Mott (Chrissie), daughter Hillary Calahan (Jeremy), and four granddaughters, brother Dr. Charles Mott (Vernagene), Jimmy Mott (Pat), sister Terri Stifflemire (Mike) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, with a memorial service following at noon at Beck Funeral Home, 1700 E. Whitestone Blvd., Cedar Park.
