Garbage truck damages Campustown apartment building

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — It was a rough way to start the day at one Central Illinois apartment complex on Tuesday. A garbage truck backed into it.

The collision happened on south Fourth and East Daniel Streets in Champaign. People who live in the building had to evacuate around 5 a.m. when the truck took a chunk of the building out. No one was hurt in the incident.

One tenant said that when it first happened, she didn’t know what was going on.

“I was sleeping and then there was a really loud crash and the whole building shook really violently,” Andrea Wong said. “And then the firefighters were knocking on my door, they unlocked it and they were like, ‘Hey, a garbage truck hit the corner of the building, so we have to evacuate.'”

Green Street Realty, which owns the building, said some tenants are being moved to different units for the time being. Construction crews are working to repair the damage; there is no timeline on when construction ill be complete.
