Gas tank find delays Noblesville State Road 32 project until early August, INDOT says
The Indiana Department of Transportation announced a delay of at least two weeks in road work on Conner Street in downtown Noblesville.
The resurfacing was halted about 10 days ago after the discovery of seven underground gas tanks at 6th Street and Conner, next to the Hamilton County Government and Judicial Center.
The current phase of the nine-month project was scheduled to be finished July 15 but INDOT now projects an early August conclusion, according to a news release.
“Upon finding the tanks, construction crews worked with the appropriate regulatory agencies to test the surrounding soil and groundwater,” INDOT Project Manager Jennifer Beck said in a news release. “Based on the testing results, we have approval to move forward with the project.”
The agency removed 1,000 gallons of groundwater, possibly mixed with fuel, from the tanks and tested the soil for contamination. Crews will remove one of the tanks but leave the others after filling them with sand. To dig them up could damage nearby infrastructure, INDOT said.
The resurfacing project will replace century-old bricks underneath the road surface and has closed parts of Conner Street from 14th Street to 6th Street since April 1. The entire State Road 32 project will be completed in four phases from just west of State Road 37 to across the White River and is scheduled to be finished by the end of 2024. It is part of a $10 million INDOT project that includes improvements on three State Road 37 intersections
